Two VCNB Employees Complete Fairfield Leadership

The Lancaster Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce recently graduated a class of 32 individuals who took part in the Chamber’s Fairfield Leadership Program. Among that class were two VCNB employees, Jennifer Lyon and Deacon Benson who work in our West Fair Avenue branch in Lancaster.

As Assistant Branch Manager, Jennifer is always looking for ways to contribute and to lead.  She joined the bank family in 2016 and says she enjoys the fast pace of her work days. What does she like best about her job?  “I would have to say all the different hats I get to wear most days. I like to keep busy, and I do not think a day goes by that I do not learn something new,” she said.

While she gets to do a lot of different things every day, she also tries to be a good leader for her staff. “I wanted to be a part of leadership in hopes to give me better understanding of my leadership position at the bank and the things I may need to work on in this position.”

Jennifer said that she learned a lot during her experience at the Fairfield Leadership and developed a greater sense of self awareness. “Self awareness, finding my strengths and weakness to understand how what I may say or do could affect the team are some of what I learned. Overall, I really enjoyed the program, it was good experience and was able to meet new people from the community.

Deacon has been with VCNB since 2024 and is a Personal Banker. When he talks about work, Deacon talks mostly about people and finding ways to help those who need him. “I love seeing the smile on a customer's face after I have just helped them out with a very stressful situation. It is almost like seeing their stress melt away right in front of my eyes. They are always so appreciative and it makes me feel like I am really making positive impacts on people's lives,” he explained.

That’s part of the reason he wanted to take part in Fairfield Leadership. “Being able to connect with other professionals in Lancaster was something I was really looking forward to. I also wanted to develop my leadership skills and this class seemed like a perfect fit for that.”

What did he learn from the experience?  “I learned how to work with and lead people who are different than me. I also learned how to be a leader even if I am not a manager. Anyone can be a leader at any position!”

VCNB has a sent numerous employees to Fairfield Leadership which teaches over eight months a variety of topics including different types of leadership and management, social responsibility, valuing people, and different ways of learning. Both Jennifer and Deacon are thankful for the opportunity to be part of this longstanding Chamber tradition.
